Jobs & Side Hustles

In celebration of me getting a job OUTSIDE of our home again (yayyy me!) I thought it would be great to talk about different jobs I've had and how it affected my mental health and how mental health affects income. Also other things I've done to make extra cash and ideas I have.  We all need to know how to hustle a little bit to get ahead in life, know what I'm sayin?

incase you forgot what money looks like, I took a picture for you. You're welcome!

Restaurant Industry: anxiety and alcohol
My first paying job was at a used toy store but I feel like my first official job was when I worked in a single screened movie theater in my small home town (it was totally haunted).  My hometown was, and still is, a touristy hot-spot on the summer weekends and boasted an impressive bar scene cramped into 2 square blocks.  All this, walking distance from my house growing up.  Ergo, I ended up becoming a little busser-girl and upon turning 18 I matriculated to the status booze-slinger (waitress). Not a bad way to make stacks of cash when you're young, dumb and pretty.  and as I recall (sorry mom!) working with all of those adults was a great way to bum cigarettes and find beer underage.  and I don't know if that is just the way my life was, or if this is the same for everyone, but I feel like working in the restaurant industry drives a human to drink.  Amirite? I never didn't party with my co-workers at the places I've been a server at. By age 25, I had had about enough pre-shift anxiety and panic attacks in the kitchen.

Beauty Industry: creative and cut-throat
I have been fascinated with the power of haircuts since I was a kid. Things were tight with a single mom growing up, but something she didn't skimp on was style. I had the best haircuts. By the time I was in high school, I started asking my stylists about how they decided to work with hair and how I can do the same thing and where to go to school.  I ultimately didn't go to cosmetology school and yeah I wonder what would've been different if I did go but I think I needed to go to school where I could study multiple subjects in order to feed my curiosity. That hasn't kept me away though. I randomly started helping out a salon that friend owns and really loved being a salon coordinator.  I could say that "I like making people feel pretty" but I think there's more to it than that. I enjoy matching together the client and stylist and finding the best fit. and I'm just so inspired by all the creativity and hard work that are involved.  I have so much respect for anyone who works in that industry.  Especially waxers.  I have my reasons.  but I am not fond of the cattiness and bitch-craft that is consistent with the beauty industry. Alpha females...I just...can't deal.  and I'll sheepishly admit that I have been bullied out of a couple jobs in my life.  Not just in the salon-world, but the animal industry that is heavily female dominated as well. I wish us girls could all just get along.  and yeah it's more complicated than that but I'm just sharing my experience.

Websites and social media marketing:
Back in 2011 I had many opportunities to help small business owners with their online presence. I worked hard and studied to learn the basics and the because social media marketing was a new way to promote your business, I had many new clients willing to work and experiment with me. I've done social media and website work for salons, individual hair-stylists and make-up artists, concrete/landscaping businesses, independent contractors, vintage fashion retailers, musicians and now I am also helping out a small boutique gift shop in downtown Traverse City with their facebook. It's a great way to have fun while being witty and helping other's make money and get their products out the door. My own website, so embarrassing, but it's never been a "finished" product to me and I'm always trying to either simplify it or add to it and never let myself sit down long enough to make it really cool and curated.  As for now, lindsayloomis.com is a direct way to reach my blog and that's good enough for me. for the moment. I'm a brand that's constantly changing and evolving. (wanna read more about brands? check out this post)

Side Hustles:
I've sold many things online.  Guitars, furniture, my underwear...no I'm not kidding about any of those. Not even the last one.  and judge me all you want but if someone wants to pay me $50 cash for my dirty laundry (hey, I sold socks too!) then that's their jam and I'll happily take their money! and I know I keep talking about it, but I WILL open an etsy store with my handmade awesomeness and donate a percentage to NAMI. (google, if your reading this, please don't take away my advertisements on this blog for not being "family friendly" I mean the underpants thing was over 10 years ago so suck it)

Speaking of Google.  Another good side jog is blogging! Ta-Dah!  Recently I had a set-back with google adsense and their content control commanders roaming the internet to take away your ads/monetary earnings) I chose Google Adsense to monetize my blog because it's tasteful, automated and doesn't distract from the content. Ever been on a blog that won't stop popping ads up in your face? Yeah, me too and it sucks.  I must admit, it was much harder than I thought it would be to qualify for monetization with google adsense. You need to have many clear, consistent and well written blog posts that consist of more writing than photographs. Also, you need to have consistent amount of readers and subscribers. (please subscribe if you can via email. it will only send an email when I post which is about once a week) The rest of the rules were easy to follow as I am passionate about mental health and creativity. I was posting blogs for over a year before I qualified and then building up my earnings took a long time. I'm still building and working on it.  Although I recently lost one month of revenue (HEARTBREAK) my ads will be back and I can make a couple bucks from readers like you! Thank you for reading! and of course if you want to support me by "buying me a coffee" I really appreciate every dollar! (see the link on top of my blog's page)

I also shortly worked in Nutrition with San Mateo County in California but that was it. I'm a certified nutritionist but no one wants to to be told what to eat, so I stopped looking for work in that field. It's useful to me and that's all that matters.

Thanks so much for reading! and sorry for my short break from posting but like I said, my monetization was temporarily down. Now I'm back and so happy to be writing to you again!
