Cozy at home: Cottagecore & Hygge Concepts

Despite all of the tragic events in a our country, it's think it's time to resume some regular content while simultaneously focusing on how we can help the BLM movement. Before I get into today's blog topic, I want to share that I have listed several new greeting cards in my etsy shop and I plan to donate some proceeds to NAMI. For more on this topic, please see my previous blog post.

Today I want to discuss a comfy and cozy topic that's been on a my mind. I read a book last year about Hygee and found it really inspiring. I have relatives and ancestors from Finland so Scandinavian life appeals to me. What's hygge?

It literally only requires consciousness, a certain slowness, and the ability to not just be present – but recognize and enjoy the present. That’s why so many people distill ‘hygge’ down to being a ‘feeling’ – because if you don’t feel hygge, you probably aren’t using the word right.

Another definition of hygge is “an art of creating intimacy” (either with yourself, friends and your home). While there’s no one English word or simple definition to describe hygge, several can be used interchangeably to describe the idea of hygge such as cosiness, charm, happiness, ‘contentness’, security, familiarity, comfort, reassurance, kinship, and simpleness. -Hyggehouse.com

Many of us spent almost all of our time at home during quarantine and I noticed a huge surge of cozy homemaking activities shown on social media such as baking, gardening, making crafts, etc. These activities can go hand in hand with wearing white flowy sundresses, cozy knits and florals. Have you heard of the concept of "cottagecore"? According to urban dictionary:
A niche aesthetic based around the visual culture of an idealized life on a Western farm. Common themes include sustainability, gardens, farm animals, rural living, and nature. Subaesthetics include dirtcore, farmcore, honeycore, and grandmacore. These communities are most prominently found on the blogging website Tumblr.
I'm truly inspired by this whole aesthetic and find it appealing and maybe you do too as you've had to transition most of your free time activities to home.  Even as movie theaters and restaurants are opening back up, perhaps you're not ready to go out quite yet. You can learn to embrace life at home by essentially having a romanticised idea of living in the countryside, cottagecore is a trend that centres around wearing cosy jumpers, floral dresses, flowers in your hair, along with knitting, crochet, baking and more.

Another cute hobby to keep yourself busy at home, and one that I see trending more on instagram every day, is keeping up a dollhouse. Sounds crazy maybe for an adult but it's actually quite soothing to pick your own dream design and make it happen in miniature. One of my favorite designers, who co-founded the couture clothing brand Wild Fox, has started a separate Instagram account for her dollhouse projects! She focuses her projects around feminists ideas and social problems in our culture. Check it out! I've been "playing" with dollhouses my whole life and she really inspires me to step up my game!

Have you started any new hobbies while spending more time at home? Tell me about them! Thanks for coming to read my blog today and I will see you again soon!
