It's such an intense time to be alive in America today. With everyone putting out onto social media and other platforms, what we are doing to help break the white patriarchy and give people-of-color the justice they deserve, I thought I'd also share how I hope I am helping. Some are protesting, some are donating time and money. All work towards equality is good work, I believe.
*sigh* this is a time again, so soon, that I have to write about how this is not political rant and I am not looking for a fight. Please, I beg of you to be patient with me and realize that I may not say the correct phrases or words to speak my mind, but I'm going to try and do it anyway.
I'm a white woman. I have been immensely spoiled by the things that come to me because of it. It's time to think more about that and take action. Texting with my longest and dearest best friend during our April quarantine, she asked how I am doing and I said, "I have never been more aware of my white privilege". What made me say that was all the news coming out of Detroit about how bad covid-19 is hitting the low-economic and POC (people of color) population. I wasn't surprised, but I was cognizant of how differently life is for those human beings the second they get up for the day or leave the house. I am worried for them and their mental health, among other things. Now it's time to take action. It's been time.
Since this is a mental health blog, and mental health is my passion, I made a monetary donation to Detroit NAMI in honor and memory of George Floyd. I also plan to volunteer my time to mental health related organizations once our lock down is thoroughly lifted. I plan to do much more than I have ever done, to lift those people who have been left behind, up in to the sky to reach their goals and dreams.
I'm also going to put a graphic in this blog post that lists more resources for POC and their mental health.
I'm not doing this for validation or attention, obviously. I just want to show that I do care and yes, everyone should stop what they are doing right now, in a sense, and find a way that they can help. and after that? Continue to help others, as much as you can, forever. Racism has no place in my life. Hate has no place in my blog. Love is all that I could ever want and want to give. To all.
and also, happy pride!
