Yule Blog Day 21: Wintertime Skin Care

Happy Yuletide ya'll! Today is Winter Solstice. Tonight we'll be burning our Yule Log of birch and roasting chestnuts (see our Yuletide plans here) but while we are in the light of day, let's talk about wintertime skin care. These are my most coveted products. I cherish each one and having been using them for a really long time so I feel I can confidently share with you these items knowing that you'll get a great product. First I want to talk about washing up.

My Momma taught me at a young age how to properly wash my face and I can't tell you how many times I've had to teach other adults, my husband included, how to properly open your pores before washing. It's important to use warm water to open your pores before washing and it's just as important to use cold water for rinsing to close your pores and reduce puffiness. I use several wash clothes a day. 1 clothe for warm water and scrubbing, one for cold water and rinsing so that's 4 total for washing my face twice a day. I use another one if I am doing a clay face mask and need to rinse/wipe that off with a towel. and some days I even use a 6th clothe if I'm getting a good sweat during my workout and to lay my face on the floor for lying t-raises. Never lay your face directly on the floor! Ew. Also don't wipe the sweat off of your face with your hand. That's what the fresh towel is for. I ordered a large stack of these facial towels from Amazon several years ago and they are still going strong. You can find these wash cloths hanging about our bathroom in different stages of drying on any given day. I used to use paper towels to pat my face dry (NEVER RUB your face to dry it off! Pat it!) because I wanted whatever I was drying my freshly cleaned skin with to be sanitary but after I ordered the large stack of cloths, I just use one to dry per day. So that brings us to a grand total of 7 wash cloths per day. I am Queen of Facial Towels.

I had horrible acne growing up and I still struggle with it today. I have been seeing a dermatologist since the tender age of 12. I also have over 10+ years experience in the beauty industry and I am a self-proclaimed product junky. I've gotten much better at using the products and using them instead of just buying them and hoping it motivates me to use them. I have a select list of cult favorites that I have been using over and over again that I'll share with you now. Skin care is very personal. I have combination skin, extremely oily t-zone, mild rosacea and am prone hormonal cystic acne. I also have massive amounts of sun damage from summers spent as a teenager/early twenty-something basking in the light of tanning beds sans SPF. After the year we've had, I've also noticed a collection of forehead lines/wrinkles developing and my smile lines are becoming more pronounced. If any of these sound like you then these products will probably help you as well.

  • Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser - Triple Action Exfoliating Facial Cleanser with Salicylic, Lactic and Glycolic Acid- Skin Smoothing Polish. I've been using this non-stop since circa 2011. I use to use it with my clarisonic (which I don't use anymore but it did well for me before I was stricken with hormonal cystic acne) but now I use it with out a brush and it really does well to clean and polish the surface of the skin. This is an intensive triple-action exfoliator with a proprietary blend of salicylic, lactic and glycolic acids polishes away dull, dry skin without irritation. It's a must.
  • Bioderma - Sensibio H2O - Micellar Water - Cleansing and Make-Up Removing - Refreshing feeling - for Sensitive Skin. I use this for everything. Toning, rinsing, splashing on my face, wetting my face before using a serum, and even using it on soft cotton rounds to take my eye makeup off every night.
  • The Original MakeUp Eraser Don't be fooled by the knock-offs on this one. You'll regret it. When I realized I was using way too many makeup wipes (although admittedly, I am not 100% weened off of) I started using this to take my makeup off. and yes, it truly even removes waterproof eye makeup. When I was convinced of the magic, I bought myself a 7 day pack so I could use one per day to take off makeup. I think that brings us to a grand total of 8 cloths a day now! Sheesh! I also use it to wipe my brushes on when doing daily brush maintenance. Speaking of brush maintenance. Wash your brushes people! I use beauty blender's cleanser for full on water/soap washes montly but on a daily basis to remove product I spray and wipe with this
  • Erborian Cc Red Correct Automatic Perfector Spf 25- this takes care of multiple things at once. Redness, sun protection, and light coverage. I have not used foundation a single time since switching to this in 2019. When I need coverage I use concealer but other than that, this is my daily go-to. It's green when it comes out of the tube (green reduces red) but quickly blends to match my fair skin.
  • Mario Badescu A.H.A. Botanical Body Soap  I use this in the shower to gently exfoliate my skin and it helps to prevent ingrown hairs and reduces pigmentation and scars.
  • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion This stuff is hands down the best spot treatment ever. I dab a tiny amount with a cotton swab on budding pimples and it just like magic it's gone the next day.
So, pretend like we're in class and the bell just rung and I need to let you go! I've got wayyyy too many products to share for one blog! Yesterday I filmed my very fist vlog and I need to start working on the edit for that. I'm also currently baking orange slices for garland and on top of that I'm finally settling in to watch Ariana Grande's "Excuse me, I Love You" on Netflix! I'm so excited! See you tomorrow!
