How to write your life into a story

This is another blog post that touches on last week's podcast episode which feature's Eddie reading an excerpt from his biography about his time in the Army.

To close out today's podcast, I want to talk a little bit about writing something that we've gone through in a story-like fashion and just some tips and tricks and words of advice if you're not a naturally gifted writer like Eddie is. Two semesters ago, I took a writing class through Grand Valley State University and it was a fiction writing class and I learned a lot about story writing. And it was cool because I got to make things that happened in my life into stories. This is not about the blog posts that I've been reading. This is way afterwards.

There are three main things that I think are important when we're writing a story if you're looking to write something out like what Eddie did that you went through. You have to have a good hook. You have to remember to have good characters you can relate to. and you have to remember the voice. Now the hook of a story is an opening statement and it's usually the first sentence. And it grabs the reader's attention so that they want to read on. And this can be done by using a few different types of hooks which are a question, a quote, a statistic or an antidote.

The second important thing characters, make sure you keep your characters relatable and interesting. And also the voice of the story is really important too. And what is a voice? In literature, the voice expresses the narrator or author's emotions, attitude, tone, and point of view through artful, well thought out use of word choice and diction. So like I was just saying to Eddie a minute ago, I could hear his kind of dry, sarcastic, witty sense of humor coming through. And... It just made the story pop that much more. Thank you so much for listening today, you guys. This meant the world to me to have Eddie on here. I have a few more guests lined up for you guys, so stay tuned for that. As always, thank you for stopping by. Take care and I will see you next week. Love, Lindsay.
